Subject: Screen Editor help needed
I'm working on debugging the tool changer on my mill, and to help me along, I'd like to add 4 DROlabels to a screen, to see what values are changing and when, but I'm failing to edit a screen.

I've set KMotionCNC to custom screen, and picked the 3AxisStepSizeHotKeys screen as a starting point. I'd really like something similar to the Basic 3 axis screen, but I can work on that later.
Once the custom screen is selected, I then open the Screen Editor. All is good to this point.

For the first DROlabel, I pick the hidden DROlabel just above the fixture offset label.
Click Show, then move it across to the space between the feedhold/stop buttons, and Feed/Speed sliders. Resize it a bit, change the font size/colour, set the VAR to 7, click Set, and all looks good. However nothing saves. This in on my Win10 Pro laptop with no KFlop connected (I don't have a spare just now, so am trying to do the bulk of work in the house before heading out to the workshop).
At what point should any edits be saved?

Before I realised the saving issue, I had moved 4 controls. 2 of which were hidden jog buttons. I thought any control could be reused, however once I made the Jog buttons visible, I couldn't change the bitmap to text. Is there a limit on what is possible?

I'm sure these questions have been answered somewhere already, but my searches have so far drawn a blank. I've watched the original video demonstrating the screen editor, but I just can't get the editor to do what I'd like.

Thanks,
Moray

Hi Moray,

Sorry you are having trouble.

To save the screen script select the Main Tab then Write Script.

Jog Buttons have special hardwired MotionButton functionality.  They cause the axis to Jog, work as a group of buttons together related to an axis, and display either a User specified Bitmap or the default bitmap.  Please choose a spare button/label or edit control for your custom purposes.

Tom,
that cleared my main problems up.

Using the 3AxisStepSizeHotKeys, I discovered the 'spare' buttons/labels weren't visible in the default screen size. I had to increase the screen width so they became visible. Perhaps an improvement for the screen editor would be to have the display area big enough to show all controls that are on the screen, then an outline showing the actual/set screen size?

Having edited the screen to add the needed DROlabels, loading it on the machine revealed a lack of user buttons. Is it possible to have buttons that work in the same way as the standard screens? I.e. only show when they're given a name in the tool setup screen?

Thanks,
Moray

Hi Moray,

I'm confused.  The Screen editor provides 40 spare buttons in addition to the 10 standard User buttons.  They can be hidden or shown with the Hide/Show property.

Tom,

on the standard, aka non-custom screens, you have the 10 standard User buttons, which only get shown if you set a value on the User Buttons tab in the Tool Setup Screen.
Is it possible to have those 10 buttons work with the same functionality on a custom screen, i.e. configure the size/position within the screen editor, but then have visibility/text/action still controlled by the User Buttons tab in the Tool Setup Screen i.e. without having to use the screen editor to set the visibility/text/action?

If I have to set everything via the Screen Editor, it's not a big problem, but it would be nice to still be able to use the User Buttons settings directly within KMotionCNC.

Thanks,
Moray

Hi Moray,

Ah I see.  No that wouldn't be easy.

I'm not sure this helps but you could open the screen script with something like WordPad and change the Show Property.
